POOR LAW CASE

At a Small Debt Court at Creetown on Saturday, before Sheriff Nicholson, the Inspector of Poor for Penninghame sued the Inspector of Anwoth for payment of £11 15s 8d, advances to the grandchildren of a crofter paying 10 guineas of rent in Penninghame parish. The children's father, whose settlement was in Anwoth, died in 1860, and their mother deserted them in June 1873 The defence was that the children were not destitute, and the grandfather, who was 68 years of age, was able to support them. From the old man's evidence it appeared he had lately had to give up his croft from frail health, and he has a wife to support, and the letters read showed that it was only in April 1875 Anwoth stated the grounds for their refusal. The Sheriff said that Penninghame was quite within their right in giving relief in the circumstances, and granted decree with expenses.
