Keswick Ridge 1880

Today we have electric light
To bless our homes and cities too.
I t does not give a light more bright,
But mere dependable and true.

Improvements great in recent years
Have made electric lights supreme
Their cleanliness the housewife cheers
They are a labour saving dream.
Oil lamps supplied with kerosene
The flame within glass chimneys placed
Before the mantle lamps were seen,
They candles largely had displaced.

But men desire stronger light
And in this mantle lamps were found.
They gave a light exceeding bright.
The flame about with glass was bound.

All mantle lamps were not alike
But very frail were mantles all.
This quality men did dislike,
It for some substitute did call.
